Harriet Rowley Elementary was dedicated on September 20, 2018 with a community celebration and school tours. It is the first new building completed by the Mount Vernon School District in 21 years. The 2-story school is built on a 15 acre site near East Division Street. Harriet Rowley Elementary will support 550 students in grades K-5, as well as act as a stepping stone and temporary home for students awaiting completion of the next project, Madison Elementary.
The aesthetic is inspired by the setting and the spirit of the Mount Vernon community. Materials and finishes combine longevity, durability, sophistication and delight. Timber harvested from the site was re-milled and used on the interior and throughout the landscape. An interior bridge connects two pairs of classroom and activity wings, stitching together a floor plan that connects spaces for learning and social engagement. Outside, students enjoy playfields surrounded by a walking path, a covered play area and an outdoor learning space.
